Online Storages

As I look at both Dropbox and Evernote, they both have great qualities. My plans are to use Dropbox because it has Cloud HQ which allows users to synchronize google docs with files in dropbox and they can edit these documents while in the browser. Since our district is going to use the cloud next year, this will make my life teaching a little easier. Another great feature a user can access any files or documents that they deleted up to 30 days after. Think about all the documents a teacher deletes because they think they don't need it, now we don't have to worry about it. Dropbox does have free apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch; whereas evernote has apps for more phones: Blackberry, Iphone, Android, Ipod touch, Palm Pre and Windows mobile. So if you use your phone for searching, google docs and blogging than evernote online storage will work for you. Evernote does have OCR addon which helps users search for files by typing in keywords and it will search images according to the text it contains. It also can read hand written text as long it is written legibly. WIth dropbox, I could put all my power points, studyguides on google docs, give my students links to all the information and they, the students, will be able to access the information at anytime.

  1. Lonnie,

Sounds like you've got this online storage stuff figured out. I like the information you've given, especially related to the connections between Dropbox and Google Docs, as well as the apps available for certain phones between Evernote and Dropbox. With the WAWM moving to the Cloud, I am particularly looking forward to not having to hop files around between emails, cd's, and jump drives between computers, wondering which version of a particular file is most current and where I had it last!

I'm glad you pointed out the feature about deleted files. I am thinking about using Dropbox with my students and as we well know, items can get deleted pretty easily! The feature to access and save documents accidentally deleted will save many a group project!

  3. Lonnie, what's up?
I think you have some great points about google docs and dropbox. I can't wait to put this all together. Do you think this summer they will let us work on this for pay? I know in years past they have asked us but nobody knew what to do. Now we do. Keep me in mind when doing this. I'm kind-of the advocate, "health guy," at Central and I know you fill that role to a point at hale too! Good stuff Lonnie and talk soon!

    :)
