Social Bookmarking
It is so confusing when looking at all the different social bookmarking sites. It is mindbloggling and time consuming trying to figure out all the ins and outs of each site. It could be very useful in health when discussing all the different topics, I would bookmark each site related to each topic and have the students blog on what what they researched. For example, when talking about the 5 components of health I would have sites for each component bookmarked. Have the students blog in groups and then individually. Also, have the students follow other individuals on one of the social bookmarks of their choosing.

Hi Lonnie -
ReplyDeleteI totally agree on the social bookmarking thing - there are some real advantages to using it, but I would be a little skeptical of some of the sites when students are using them (I felt like I was in a Bing commercial when I tried using StumbleUpon...and if I felt like that, I know that 35 students would probably feel the same way!) I do think that it can be helpful between teachers and students - finding great resources!
Your ideas sound great! Is health a possible Moodle-type class? Or would you have to have computer access at school to do the blogging? (Perhaps on their i-phones?)
I'll second that. I can't agree with you more that there is an overwhelming amount of information to go through when trying to compare/contrast all of the social bookmarking sites. I suppose it only benefits us to know what each has to offer before we choose one to go with. I have a tendency to pick one, figure it out and then stick with it. Not sure if that's always the best method.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea about using social bookmarking as way to guide student research. I've found that students just Google a topic and only look at the first two or three hits. Inevitably, they just pull all their information from Wikipedia. Your idea would be great for getting students onto new, informative, and reliable websites.
Cool idea with the use of bookmarks, you could also use the comments feature so students can interact and collaborate on a topic.
